An Airdrie roofing company is facing child labour and health and safety charges after a 14-year-old employee fell off a roof in Lacombe last summer.

Alberta’s labour ministry launched a rare joint investigation under the Employment Standards Code and the Occupational Health and Safety Act after the boy fell nearly four metres off a residential roof in July and required hospital treatment.

Vital Contracting Ltd. and its operators were charged with inappropriately employing a person under 15 years of age, failing to ensure the safety of a worker and four other related workplace safety offences.

The company faces fines of up to $100,000 under the Employment Standards Code and up to $500,000 and six months in jail under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
