Lehmann, who had scored twice in the game, took the first one, but lost control of the puck at the crease. Then Then Swiss scoring star Philipp Kurashev took the next one, but failed to beat Danil Tarasov, so it remained a 3-3 game.
The IIHF cleared up some confusion, saying had Lehmann scored on the first penalty shot, there would not have been a second. Instead there would have been a minor penalty awarded.
It was a pivotal moment. The Russians had trailed 3-1. A Swiss goal or two might have deflated them. Instead, the Russians scored next and went on to win 7-4.
Funny, but every team in Group A has red as the dominant colour: Canada, Switzerland, Russia, Denmark and Czech. Every team in Group B has blue: Sweden, Finland, U.S., Slovakia and Kazakhstan. All that red makes me think Canada switched to that other national colour of ours -- black -- to separate itself from the pack.
