Romania’s Simona Halep is two wins away from defending her Rogers Cup title.
The No. 2 seed downed France’s Carolina Garcia 6-4, 6-2 in a quarterfinal on Saturday at the Aviva Centre at York University.
The match was supposed to be Friday, but never got started because of rain.
In a semifinal Saturday night, Halep will face No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, who beat No. 4 Garbine Muguruza of Spain 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The final two sets were played on Saturday after rain washed out play Friday night.
American Sloane Stephens will face No. 6 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the first semifinal on Saturday afternoon.
