Could have gone back to KHL if he hadn't been with NHL team by Tuesday.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled winger Nikita Soshnikov from the Marlies, just ahead of the deadline that opened a door for him to return to the KHL.
Soshnikov is expected to join the Leafs in practice Wednesday (the team has Tuesday off). Frederik Gauthier, who was recalled last week with Auston Matthews on the injury shelf, was returned to the Marlies.
Soshnikov’s contract contains a clause that permitted him to return to the KHL if the Leafs weren’t able to have him on the NHL roster by Nov. 14. In addition, if the Leafs return him to the Marlies at any time this season, he is allowed to request a loan to the KHL.
Soshnikov played in 14 games with the Marlies, posting five goals and 12 points. He put up five goals and nine points in 56 games with the Leafs last season.
Gauthier did not appear in any games for the Leafs during his call-up.
