A group from the Filipino community has come together on Facebook to raise relief funds for Typhoon Haiyan victims.
“As soon as we found out our friends and family were OK, the first thought was we wanted to do a fundraiser,” said Francis Arevalo, a 21-year-old UBC student. Arevalo, who was born in Canada, said his family’s first reaction to news of the massive storm hitting was “pure panic.”
For the last three years, Arevalo has been putting on a variety event called “A Night with Friends” consisting of performers and artists gathering to perform for one another.
Following news of the devastation in the Philippines, Arevalo decided the show could also be a vehicle for fundraising this year.
Others in his social network were brainstorming similar ideas, and several came together on Facebook to plan a joint fundraiser, using different areas of expertise.
Arevalo said “A Night with the Philippines” will be a celebration of Filipino spirit, starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Croatian Cultural Centre.
The fundraising show has partnered with Rose Charities, a Canadian-based, internationally connected organization which connects with on-the-ground charities in other countries, Arevalo said.
