The purchase of a deck of cards got the youngsters off their phones and brought the three together

You can say it was in the cards that Patrick Marleau would take Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner under his wing on the Maple Leafs latest road trip.

The cards, in this case, were an actual deck, and the games were Euchre and -- believe it or not -- Old Maid.

The joke now is that the 38-year-old Marleau now has six kids: Four at home and two on the road.

"They're good guys," Marleau said of the two 20-year-olds. "It's been fun to get to know them. It's kind of happened organically. They're fun to be around."

"They wanted to play the card game on their phones, but we got away from it," said Marleau. "In Carolina, I went down to the gift shop and bought some cards. Growing up in Saskatchewan I played a lot of cards."

"We were playing simple card games, then Mitch taught me how to play euchre so now we play euchre," said Matthews.

"He wants to play constantly, which sucks," Marner said of Matthews. "Sometimes you just want to sit there and relax with your phone."
