Nurse agreed to a three-year, $10 million (all figures in US dollars) deal, reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who was also the first to report the news that the Raptors were promoting their assistant coach to the head job.
He also reported Thursday that assistant Rex Kalamian is leaving to join the Los Angeles Clippers. That means the Raptors now have three openings on their coaching staff to replace Nurse, Kalamian and Raptors905 coach Jerry Stackhouse who is leaving for Memphis.
Casey was reportedly owed $6.5 million next season before he was fired by Raptors president Masai Ujiri. Casey signed a five-year deal with the Pistons for an average of $7 million a season, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Nurse first joined the Raptors in 2013 as an assistant in charge of the team’s offence under Casey.
Nurse, an Iowa native, is a veteran coach who has worked in myriad organizations. He was a two-time coach of the year in the British Basketball League and was involved with the British national team program.
